Background and Big Picture
The City of Deming and Deming Luna County Economic Development are working on a West Side Revitalization Project that will include a business incubator. We realize that the project timeline doesn’t help businesses that need incubation NOW! With some help from our team, we came up with the LOCO for LOCAL initiative to show appreciation for all of our local entrepreneurs.
So what is the initiative?
Loco for Local is a fresh spin on the average shop local campaigns and is intended to:
- Increase the longevity and impact of shop local campaigns by educating the community on the importance of local businesses to our economy
- Showcase our current locally owned businesses so they keep choosing Deming!
- Allow entrepreneurs to connect with existing local champions and gain knowledge and experience in their market
- Increase the success of ALL businesses
- Decrease leakage of holiday spending
Loco for Local is intended to be mutually beneficial to host businesses that are trying to engage the community more, and pop-up businesses that don’t have a physical storefront yet.
How do I participate?
- Join DLCED! Become a member and help us meet our Mission of creating opportunities in Deming, Luna County.
- Locally owned businesses fill out this google form as a:
-BUSINESS HOST
-POP UP BUSINESS
-Program Champion
What’s the Benefit to me (BUSINESS HOST)?
- Marketing of your local business – local impact – local product through paid social media ad
- Increased foot-traffic / expand customer base
- Listed on our LOCO for Local Page on website
What’s the Benefit to me (POP UP BUSINESS)
- Mentorship from established business
- Physical location to sell
- Access to established foot traffic / market
What does local mean?
What is local? Here's how we define "local" businesses and products:
Local Owned businesses are:
- Private companies (ex. single owner or partnership, employee owned, co-operative or social enterprise/non-profit)
- Headquartered in Deming, Luna County
- > 50% of owners residing in Deming, Luna County
Local Grown products are:
- Agricultural products grown in Deming, Luna County (ex. chile, hay, onion, cotton)
- Manufactured products with >50% materials grown/sourced from Deming, Luna County
Locally Made* products are:
- Wholly or largely (>50%) manufactured or processed in Deming, Luna County
*Can include products produced without local materials or ingredients. Local made products with local ingredients or materials can add “Local Grown” if applicable.

We were excited to co-host our 2nd Annual Small Biz Pop Up with Get It! Nutrition Club this year to kick off the "SHOP LOCAL" season with our Loco for Local Initiative. This year, small businesses set up as pop-up vendors in the Get It! Nutrition location and DLCED purchased gift cards from local biz! You can read more about the event from our press release!

One of our downtown businesses gave us a great idea -- share the businesses that community members CAN shop locally at! We started a list of local businesses and hope to grow the project into an interactive map here on our website.
